Goodbye sweet girl

Nothing can prepare you for the loss of a beloved pet and although our girl was a ripe old age, we are all reeling at the shock and sadness of having to say goodbye.

This precious, clever, funny little dog found Moogsdad and I fourteen years ago (we've had her for most of our nearly 16 years together), when she was a bedraggled, mangey little 19month old mess in a tatty rescue centre. We'd only gone to look.

She came home with us straight away and within an hour was sitting in the dirtiest bath water you ever did see.

From day one she gently trained us in the right way for Border Collie owners to behave.

She brought us a million lifetimes worth of love, fun and joy.

She had her little quirks - like barking at the full moon, hot air balloons and the birds twittering in the garden; never wanting to play with other dogs; avoiding all children apart from our own two.

After a desperately difficult few days we made the decision all pet owners dread. Seeing our dear sweet girl unable to walk, lying sad and uncomfortable brought that decision sooner than we'd hoped.

So it was, that at 9 o'clock this morning our beautiful Moog gently left us and drifted off into a sleep from which she'll never wake. We were with her to the end and leaving her broke our hearts.

Good dog, Meg - we feel lost without you but you'll be in our hearts for ever.

Oh I am so sorry. I know that horrible sadness that you are feeling and I also know that nothing I can say will make it better. Just remember all the love and happiness that you have had from her and in turn given her. It is the most painful and hardest decision that we as dog owners have to make.

I am thinking of you xx

Sending you all cyber hugs. It's the hardest decision to make but also the best. In time you will feel a sense of peace from Moog. She is in a better place - young, pain free and happy and waiting for you all.

Oh Lesley- I'm crying right now. I am so sorry. I've never met Meg in person but I've loved her, just reading about all the things she does, and the part of your family that she is. What a beautiful tribute to her. When our little Chompy passed (this was years ago), it was like a light went out and everything was oddly silent and and stuck and surreal for a while. It was a longer while than I'd expected, but shorter than I'd feared. We have only the happiest, funniest, silliest, precious-est memories of her now. And we don't remember (not much, anyway) of the anxious, sick days just before she left - just the best stuff. Big hugs to you - and take care of you, too, OK?

What a wonderful and happy life you gave that little dog, who got such a rough start! She brought you joy and you brought her kindness, from the day you brought her into a loving family to the day you made it possible for her to pass away in comfort and peace. So often it's the last kindness we can give - and how could we do less? - but the loss is still so deep. Much sympathy (and tears) to Moogsfamily.

When I first read this post I thought you would have many many comments, because I'm sure so many people wish they could help you deal with this loss in some way. But I didn't comment then, because I felt like there was nothing I could say to make it better. As I think about it though, I realize that there is some comfort in knowing that we all send you love, and that we have at least a little sense of what a lovely girl your Meg was. Take care of yourselves, Kate in Oregon (who dreadfully misses her best boy tuxedo cat, Loki, but would never trade having had the joy of knowing him).

That dreadful decision that all pet owners have to make. Our ancient collie Horace died last October and I still miss him in the empty kitchen every morning. I share your's and your family's sorrow.

Oh Lesley, I'm so sorry to read about Moog. Our four-legged family members become such beloved friends and deciding it's time to say goodbye may be the kindest and most loving thing that you can do for them when they're suffering but it is also the hardest thing to do. I hope that the beautiful photos of her and the happy memories associated with them win out over the pain of loosing her and bring you a lot of smiles in the future.
